What a sweepstake casino is
A sweepstakes casino is an online casino-style product that splits play into two virtual currencies. Gold Coins (or an equivalent entertainment token) have no cash value. Sweeps Coins, or a similarly named prize currency, can be redeemed for a prize after identity checks, provided the operator’s rules are met.
The operator does not sell the prize currency as a bet. The purchase is framed as buying the entertainment currency, with Sweeps Coins attached as a promotional bonus, and a no-purchase-necessary route must exist for the prize layer. That packaging is why the product is argued under US promotional-sweepstakes law rather than under a state gaming licence.
It is a different product from a social casino, where virtual chips cannot be redeemed for cash, and from a licensed or offshore real-money casino, where the stake is money and the payout is money.
How the two currencies work
Gold Coins are the session fuel. Losing them does not create a cash liability.
Sweeps Coins are the prize layer. Redemption, when it is offered, is a prize claim, not a gambling withdrawal in the licensed-casino sense, and operators set their own minima, identity steps and monthly limits.
US promotional law requires a free method of entry with odds that are not worse than paid entry. Whether a given mail-in or alternative-entry process meets that test is a fact about that operator and that state, not a property of the category.

Sweepstakes vs social vs real-money
| Product | What it is |
|---|---|
| Social casino | Sells or grants chips that never leave the game. |
| Sweepstakes casino | Adds a redeemable prize currency on top of an entertainment currency. |
| Real-money casino | Takes a cash stake under a gambling licence, or offshore without one. |
Those three products can share slot math and lobby design. They do not share the same cashier, the same tax form, or the same regulator. Licensed US online casino is still a short list of states. Sweepstakes distribution follows promotional law until a state bans the model.

What 2026 did to the US map
In 2026 California, Indiana, Maine, New York, Louisiana and Tennessee banned sweepstakes casinos. California moved first, on 1 January, through Assembly Bill 831. Eilers & Krejcik Gaming had put California at roughly 17–20% of the US sweepstakes market before that ban.
Blask data on the published US sweepstakes read showed demand in the four banned states Blask tracks falling by more than half, with Tennessee down 59%. In the remaining 44 states, sweepstakes Blask Index rose by almost 20% in H1 2026. The national segment reached $7.2B on Blask’s published figure, and by mid-2026 sweepstakes brands led combined licensed and offshore demand in 35 of 50 states.

Players leaving banned states did not show up as a matching lift in traditional casino and sportsbook demand in those same states. Traditional demand there fell by about 18% over the same window.

Chumba Casino still led H1 2026 with 17.9% BAP among sweepstakes brands. Crown Coins overtook Chumba on monthly Blask Index in June 2026; the half-year ranking still had Chumba first.

Oklahoma is scheduled to halt operators in November 2026, and individual brands have already left or limited Arizona, Illinois and Iowa amid expected restrictions.
💡 Key point: the 2026 pattern so far is that a ban redistributes demand into neighbouring states faster than it creates licensed-casino demand in the banned state.
What the definition does not settle
- A dual-currency lobby is not a licence.
- A no-purchase-necessary clause is not a finding that the product is lawful in every state.
- A prize redemption is not proof that the player’s tax treatment is simple.
The useful split for an operator, affiliate or analyst is product class: social (no cash out), sweepstakes (prize currency), real-money (stake is money). Geography then decides which class can be distributed.
