Kenya iGaming market rose 19.5% on a league weekend that never happened
Kenya’s football season was called off hours before kick-off, and the country’s demand curve spiked anyway.
On Sept 16 the Football Kenya Federation told clubs the SportPesa League would start on Sept 19. Late on Friday Sept 18 the federation called off the opening round, hours before kick-off and with clubs already travelling, citing conflicting High Court orders out of Murang’a and Kiambu.
Blask Index for Kenya rose 19.5% week-on-week over Sept 14–20, and the whole gain sits on Sept 19–20 — the weekend that produced no Kenyan league football at all. Daily demand roughly doubled against the band the market had held since the start of the month before falling back, with nothing in the series building toward it.

The brand split follows the news rather than the fixtures. SportPesa, whose name the league carries, grew 50.3% week-on-week — more than twice the market’s rate — and roughly tripled over the two days into Sept 20, while Betika, Kenya’s largest brand at 38.3% BAP, grew 18.6% and simply moved with the market. Kenyan search attention concentrated on the operator sitting in every headline about the collapse.
The licensing cliff six days out left no trace. Kenya’s operating licences expire on Sept 24 and the High Court is not due to rule until Oct 2, yet the daily series shows no build toward either date. Exposure is why that gap matters: onshore brands held 92.8% of Kenyan CEB (projected revenue) in August and 95.5% of search demand over Sept 1–20, so a week without valid licences would land on almost the whole market rather than on an offshore fringe.
