What powers unbranded iGaming demand in the Balkans

Blask data shows what shapes generic demand in a region where players search almost entirely by brand.

In Balkan countries, unbranded iGaming searches are rare. The demand that exists is often seasonal, with football moving the numbers — but in different categories. Interest in Online Casino is more stable, though that category dominates only in Romania and Greece.

A low-maturity region

According to Blask data, iGaming demand in Balkan countries is shaped by direct brand interest as the Maturity Index (MI) of the region’s markets sits deep in low values. In five out of six Balkan countries, where the feature is currently available, the MI stayed in single digits between June 2025 and May 2026. The only exception is Slovenia, whose Maturity Index in May 2026 was 11.46, ranging from a low of 9.3 in September 2025 to a peak of 15.05 in December 2025.

In three of the Balkan countries, the Maturity Index peaked in the same month — August 2025. The spike was driven by the Fantasy category as players were searching for options ahead of the new football season. That month, Fantasy’s share of total unbranded demand reached 81.7% in Serbia, 67.3% in Montenegro and 66.2% in North Macedonia.

Fantasy leads

The August spike and continued interest in Fantasy through the season made it the leading category in those three countries. But only in Serbia did it account for over half of unbranded demand across the full 12 months. The second largest category in the country is Online Casino.

In North Macedonia Fantasy was responsible for over 43% of unbranded interest in the last 12 months. Online Betting and Online Casino categories shared roughly the same amount together.

In Montenegro the categories’ demand is split almost evenly between Fantasy and Online Betting. The difference is only 0.7 percentage points in favor of Fantasy.

In three other countries Fantasy’s share was much lower. For the 12 months, it ranged from 2.9% in Greece to 3.4% in Romania. Although Fantasy still shows an August spike in these markets, it never becomes the leading category.

Casino and Betting take over

Unbranded demand in Romania is dominated by Online Casino, which accounts for over three-quarters of the total. Inside the category demand is mostly the general interest, with Slots being leading subcategory otherwise.

Online Casino also leads in Greece, accounting for over 53% of unbranded demand over the twelve months. But it ranked as the top category in only five of those months. In the rest, Online Betting led. That demand is driven by Football, which accounts for 38.5% of total Online Betting volume and is therefore tied to the calendar.

The highest share of Online Betting in unbranded demand is registered in Slovenia. Surprisingly, the second place is occupied by the Lottery, which accounts for almost 40%. That is by far the highest value for Lottery category among all six Balkan countries.

Bottom line

There is not much of a common pattern for unbranded demand across the Balkans. What the countries really share is a low Maturity Index and an August lift driven by the football calendar. The clearest outlier is Slovenia, where interest in Lottery is much more notable than in other countries.
